Week 4 Rankings

Well, after beating Air Force, Utah stays at #1, and after their first SEC win Vandy stays at #3. Jumping up to the #2 spot is Alabama, with a solid road win. Auburn, Air Force, and Oregon drop big time after home losses.

And while you're here, take notice of the new ranking title. Other people have their "power" rankings or whatever, while these are based strictly on past achievement.

Now before you get all up in arms, let me break down why the Big 10 & Big 12 have achieved the most so far according to my rankings. The simple reason is that they haven't started conference play yet. The Average Points is not just points earned in non-conf games - it's points earned in all games. So even though the SEC has only lost 4 non-conference games, their teams have already lost 7 conference games, bringing the total number of losses in the conference to 11. Four of their teams are in the negative as opposed to one from the Big10 & three from the Big12. Once the Big10 & Big12 start conference play, and after the SEC has played as many non-conf games, it'll even out and the SEC will probably be ahead. So relax.

As far as the others go, another 4-13 week for the non-BCS confs vs the BCS confs, bringing their totals to 18 wins & 63 losses. Another dozen losses for the I-AA teams, taking them to 2-75. Home field advantage is still really high at 74.2%, but we're still seeing a lot of non-conference games.

This is a great website, very balanced and insightful. One observation I had is that the weekly rankings are skewed because the total number of points depends on the number of games played, and until the end of the season, some teams will have played different numbers of games. Would a more comparable ranking be created by dividing the total number of points by the number of games, giving the average points per game? This would be very easy to do with your ranking table, and remove the early season bias towards teams that have played more games.

Hey there, is this the same Steve from the Week 1 Rankings comments? Seems like a similar idea, so forgive me if I just point you to my answer in the comments there - I think it covers all the bases. Thanks for the note.
