Week 2 Rankings

So what did the second weekend of football serve up? Let's start with the conferences.

The Good: The Pac10 went 7-0 in non-conference play, including wins over the SEC and Big12. Solid.

The Big12 went 10-2, raising their non-conf slate to 21-3 so far. Nice.

The Bad: The ACC went 4-5, losing all their big games. Ouch.

The non-BCS conferences have fewer wins (5) against the BCS conferences than DI-AA teams do (6). Of course they've played fewer games (42 vs 64), but still, that's not a good way to gain respectability.

As for the team rankings, well... don't shoot the messenger. And I'll say it again - this is only the second week. Things will sort themselves out. Are the Trojans the best team out there? Of course not. Have they achieved the most? According to the rankings, yup - but it's only by a fraction over dozens of other teams. Has Virginia Tech achieved more than just two other teams? Well, yeah. They haven't won, and they've lost bad.

In a lot of ways, these first few weeks are better at indicating how computer rankings work without a lot of data than they are at seeing what humans see. So be it.
