Week 13 Rankings

Some interesting developments at the top of the rankings. Alabama and Florida are still #1 & #2, but their lead over Texas is significant. The winner of the SEC championship is going to finish the regular season #1 in the rankings, but the loser won't drop too far. Texas, if they win the Big12 championship, should gain enough points to jump into the #2 spot... but it's going to be close.

All of the other reams are pretty well spread out. TCU, Boise State, and Cincinnati at spots 4-6 are in the 400's, then there's a huge drop to the 2-loss teams of Ohio State, Oregon, Georgia Tech, and Iowa. Another big drop to the best 3-loss teams rounds out the top 15.

Toughest SoS is Mississippi State by far, still trailed by the Pac10 northwest schools. But the SEC got a big boost in the SoS department this weekend, now claiming 6 of the top 12 spots. (Though interestingly that group does not include Florida or Alabama, whose SoS's rank #39 and #29, respectively.) The Pac10 still has 6 of the top 16 spots, with the ACC's Florida State, Virginia Tech, Virginia rounding out the toughest.

Some big changes in the conference race this weekend. With their two wins over the best teams in the ACC and another over Florida State, the SEC takes over the top spot from the BigEast, but just barely. Said BigEast beat Illinois, but lost to Miami (FL), going 1-1 in non-conf play this weekend. With Stanford's victory over Notre Dame, the Pac10 takes over the #3 spot ahead of the Big12 and Big10.

Week 12 Rankings

No Sunday game this week, so here are the rankings.

Things are spreading out a bit at the top. Alabama has increased their lead over #2 Florida to about 15 points. But like in the BCS, this really doesn't matter - whoever wins their showdown in two weeks is most likely going to end up #1 overall in my final regular season rankings. The only team that can prevent that is Texas, who have a shot, but not much of one. TCU has crept close to the top two spots, getting within 4 points of the Gators.

Not too many other big movers this week. Oregon notches two more spots to cash in at #9, Miami (FL) jumps four spots, and North Carolina clocks in at #18, moving up ten spots. Toughest SoS is by far Mississippi State (playing Georgia Tech and Houston will definitely help your schedule toughness), then the northwest Pac10 schools.

Week 11 Rankings

Little late with the rankings this week... busy busy. The power rankings will be up later today.

Things are getting pretty bunched up at the top. Alabama and Florida are still #1 & #2, but TCU has moved into the #3 slot, bumping Cincinnati & Texas to #4 & #5. All are within 24 points of each other, but the advantage will go to probably Texas and Alabama or Florida because of their conference championship games.

Something that obviously needs addressed is that USC is sitting at #13, only having dropped 2 spots. I was pretty shocked at that - these are achievement rankings, and getting plastered by Stanford at home isn't much of an achievement. They're even in front of 8-2 LSU, for crying out loud! What's going on here? Well, part of it is how far the top 15 are spread out. The top 5 are all at 360 or more, but then there's major drop-offs: Only Boise State, Georgia Tech, and Ohio State are over 300, and only Iowa, Pitt, and Oregon are over 250. So there's a wide difference to account for there.

Another thing is the fact that the Trojans have played a rough schedule (according to my rankings, of course) - of the top 40 teams, only Oregon and Virginia Tech have played tougher. They only dropped -15 points, and the loss to Stanford cost them -30, but their big road wins cushioned their fall. Ohio State beat Iowa, making the win in Sept look even better and gaining almost ten points for that game alone, & California beat Arizona, gaining the Trojans another 7+ points. The win over Ohio State is easily the best non-conference win by any team (the next closest is Houston's over Oklahoma State), and it's also the biggest point-gaining win overall (Northwestern over Iowa is the only other game that's earned 70+ points). In comparison, LSU's best win was at Georgia, and that only earned them 47+ points - USC has four wins that have earned that much. As far as losses go, LSU has lost far fewer points, losing to Florida & Alabama, but it's the Trojans big road wins that are keeping them up.

Week 10 Rankings

Another Sunday night game, another late set of rankings. Power rankings tomorrow.

Of course Iowa drops from #1, making way for Alabama. Florida is close by, as are Cincinnati, Texas, and TCU. Iowa drops to #6, but they're still ahead of Boise State, mainly due to SoS. Other big movers this week are Ohio State, up eight spots to #9, Oregon and Penn State drop -5, and Navy moves up to #26 after winning at Notre Dame.

Mississippi State's tough as nails slate has moved them past Washington for #1 on the SoS, while spots #2, #3, and #4 are all Pac10 teams. In fact, half of the Pac10 is in the top 15 toughest SoS, and nine are in the top 30. At the bottom of the pack are the 0-9 teams - Rice, New Mexico, Eastern Michigan, and Western Kentucky.

I'm a week late with this, but congratulations to 7-2 Temple for earning their first votes in the polls since I can remember, at least during the BCS era. With their win this week, they've now garnered 8 more votes in the Coaches' and 7 more in the AP. It might seem small, but that's a big deal for a team that's been down for so long.
