Weekly Rankings: Week 5, Sept 29

Quite the shakeup this week, with a ton of good teams taking their first loss. Our previous #1, West Virginia, dropped all the way to #18 after losing to South Florida (who jumped up to #12 themselves). Taking over the top spot is LSU, and they have a healthy lead over #2 Arizona State. The top 15 teams are the only ones still undefeated, with Illinois, Oklahoma, and West Virginia the tops of the 4-1 teams. (Hawaii is last among the 5-0 undefeateds and even behind some of the 4-0 undefeateds mainly because of their weak SoS, ranked 116th out of 120.)

As far as schedule strength goes, Washington still has the toughest road by far, with their season-long opponents earning over 700 points while going 43-19 so far. The toughest schedule to date belongs to Akron though, who's faced 5-0 Ohio State, 5-0 Connecticut, and 4-1 Indiana already this season. The road is about to get really tough for Florida, who's next 5 opponents are 21-3. Good luck, Gators.

The conference strength picture has found itself in a logjam. The top 4 conferences are all within about 4 points of each other, with the Big East barely leading the SEC. Way behind in 5th is the Pac 10, and way behind them in 6th is the ACC. Since most non-conference play has been finished, conference strength will really be sorted out by conference play.
