Rankings: Week 5

It's October, which means that it's time to start looking at the teams first.

At the top are the 5-0 teams, specifically Iowa followed by LSU & Cincinnati. Each of them have at least one great road win, despite some of their close calls and/or erratic play. We're also seeing some of the filtering going on - both Virginia Tech and USC at 4-1 are ahead of Florida at 4-0. This is because 1) the Hokies and Trojans have played tough schedules (whereas Florida has not), and 2) their wins have made up for their one loss (VT lost to Alabama but have beaten Miami & Nebraska, while USC lost to Washington but have beaten Ohio State and their other three W's were by more than 20). Plus the obvious fact that Florida had a bye week this week, so they moved down a bit.

SoS still reigns in the West, with Washington, Colorado, and Washington State taking up three of the top four spots. Of the top teams, Ohio State, LSU, and USC are solid - that'll help them in the long run.

At the bottom of the pack are Ball State, New Mexico, Rice, and Miami (OH), all at 0-5. The worst BCS teams are Washington State and Purdue at 1-4, and Virginia and Louisville at 1-3.

Looking at the conference race, we can see that... Huh? The BigEast? Really? Yup. Here's the breakdown.

Sure they're opponents have been weak, but no weaker than the SEC's or Big12's. All of their losses have been to teams .500 or better, and a lot of their wins were on the road at decent to good teams. Six of the eight conference teams are 3-1 or better. Solid.

Here's more stats to ponder - the 2009 Non-Conference Games, along with records, points earned, and teams yet to play.
