Week 12 Power Ranks

Okay, let's break these numbers down a bit more, focusing on the front-runners for the title game.

Well well, it appears that Boise State is catching up to TCU in more areas than one. The Broncos and Horned Frogs are heads and shoulders above everyone else in the FBS in total power, the only two teams over 140% on offense and at 50% on defense. The defensive stats pop out - they're either first or second in all defensive categories, followed by Ohio State and Alabama. On offense they continue to put up top-10 numbers, gaining around 150% of what their opponents usually allow. Solid.

A lot has been made of the Oregon and Auburn defenses, and if they're stout enough to get it done when it counts. First off, both are better than average. They allow 93.3% & 90.4% of their opponents' average yards, and 83.5% and 86.2% of their opponents average points, respectively. So Oregon's ypg rank is #44, while their ppg rank is just outside the top-20 at #21 - not much to worry about there. Same with Auburn, ranked #31 in ypg and #35 in ppg. Are they offense-killers like TCU and Boise State? No, but they don't need to be with their top-5 offenses. And they're certainly not as bad as some people are making them out to be.

Other interesting notes...

● Alabama is just ahead of Auburn, being 40% worse on offense but 23% better on defense. Should be a great game Friday.

● Arkansas is right between the Alabama schools, and a bit better than LSU.

● 7-4 Iowa and Miami (FL) and 7-3 West Virginia are better than advertised...

● Nevada, Michigan State, and Northwestern are probably overrated...

● Georgia is the highest ranked sub-.500 team at 29th overall, a good 30+ spots higher than Georgia Tech.
