the Other Rankings
The AP & Coaches polls are out for week 2, and we've had 6 losses by top 25 teams so far this year, 4 of those by teams in the top 10. Let's see how some of the losers drops stack up against the norms.
#3 Oklahoma upset loss to BYU, 14-13: drop: #13 AP, #14 Coach. -10 & -11 spots, respectively.
Average drop: -7.6 spots AP, -9.3 Coach.
Oklahoma dropped more than the average. Could this be because Bradford got injured, and thus the Sooners aren't as potentiall good? Maybe.
#7 Virginia Tech loss to Alabama, 34-24: drop: #14 AP, #15 Coach. -7 & -8 spots, respectively.
Average drop: -5.5 spots AP, -9.3 Coach.
So Tech dropped more than the average in the AP, but less than the average in the Coaches. Interesting.
#5/#6 Oklahoma State upset loss to Houston, 45-35: drop: #16 AP, #17 Coach. -11.
Average drop: -7.6 spots AP, -12.1 Coach.
So OK State also dropped more than the average in the AP, but less than the average in the Coaches.
#8/#7 Ohio State loss to USC, 18-15: drop: #11 AP, #11 Coach. -3 & -4 spots, respectively.
Average drop: -5.5 spots AP, -3.6 Coach.
The good news for Ohio State is that it seems the voters respected their performance. They dropped less than the average in the AP and just about the small average in the Coaches.
One other interesting item of note: with their 1,491 votes this week, the Florida Gators are the first team to top 200,000 AP votes in the BCS era. Congrats.
