Rankings: Week 9
With the Sunday night game, the rankings are a bit late this week. Power rankings will be up tomorrow. Here we go.
Iowa stays at #1 and has a huge lead, but they're also the only team that has played nine games. Another thing working against them is that they don't have a conference championship game to possibly earn points from, as Texas, Florida, and Alabama do. So it'll be interesting to see if they can hold on. Alabama has dropped down to #5 because of their bye week.
Washington's ridiculously hard SoS is the main reason they're still in positive territory even at 3-5, while Mississippi State's schedule is 2nd hardest. Everyone else is way behind. Of the top twenty teams though, Oregon has had the roughest road, which can only help them in the long run. Bottom of the pile are four winless teams (W. Kentucky, E. Michigan, New Mexico, and Rice) and Ball State.

Just one switch in the conference race - the Big10 takes over the #3 spot from the Big12 because of Ohio State's demolition of New Mexico State.

Love the work, as always, but given the softness of OOC schedules (especially among the SEC, Big East, Big 12, and Big Ten), I am not sure if you not comparing apples to oranges.
After all, should FCS wins count at all? I think games with FCS schools are an abomination and all such wins should not count. With teams such as Rutgers and Ole Miss and South Florida playing two FCS schools, their OOC records are inflated.
Sure teams like Nebraska attempted to inflate their records with three games versus Sun Belt schools (many of which are not that much better than FCS schools). But the achievement rankings putting the Pac-10 in 5th place when they play real OOC games and win most of them seems like it needs some adjustment.
Hey there Pete, you've hit upon the main thing I struggle with regarding my achievement rankings. On one hand I totally agree that wins against I-AA should be worth considerably less, and losses to I-AA teams penalized considerably more. But at the same time, enlarging the scale of how much a win is worth can screw up winning or losing's primary place in my rankings - you'd often see one and two loss teams ranked higher than undefeated teams just based on quality wins or bad losses.
I think the way they're added in to individual team's point total works well, but you're right - when it comes to adding up games for conference strength there's definitely problems. I'll have a post about that idea coming up, but it's definitely something I'll be looking at this off-season as I'm tinkering with my rankings.
I look forward to you assessment of this issue. You do some of the very best analysis on college football.
You're too kind, really. :)
